In Germany, on the night of the 5th December, children put a shoe outside their front door. St Nikolaus visits while the children are sleeping and leaves sweets and fruit if children have been good; or sticks and twigs if children have been bad. This gives the children an indication of their behaviour, giving them the opportunity to change this before Christmas Eve.
Our boys left their boots outside their room. Thankfully, they woke up to chocolate and satsumas the following day. Phew...relief (and excitement to have chocolate for breakfast) all round.
